Lasers, Y’all…

Rocket City Lasers grew out of a two week trial of Laser Camp in the summer of 2023. Our campers helped us brainstorm ideas for clubs and camps and when a former classroom space became available at Campus 805, with access to an auditorium, we thought, why not?!

We strive to provide a safe, friendly and creative space where all our students and instructors can belong and thrive on the joys of sound and light. We celebrate everyone!

We hope to eventually have students who are producing shows supporting local artists in local venues, celebrating homecoming at their schools with laser spirit logos, and becoming instructors themselves. We plan to add lighting and sound design to our offerings once we are more established (and have more space!)

Photonics - the physical science of light waves - is also an area we plan to expand on with lectures, field trips and hands on activities, to allow students to explore industrial, scientific and defense uses of lasers, optics and more.

“Our big vision is to found a national network of Laser Clubs where students can come together locally, regionally and nationally to explore science, practice their art and celebrate their creativity.”

About Us

Alex Hall, a middle aged woman with long brown hair and glasses
  • Alex Hall, Founder and CEO, and our official Laser Safety Officer, has been engaged in informal science education for more than three decades. A former science center CEO, children's science book author, and current mom to a fifth grader, Alex has taught all ages about physics, space, aviation and just being curious about everything!

Alex used to present laser shows in the mid 1990's in a planetarium in Florida and has a lot of fond memories of the marriage of music and vivid art.

  • Michael Buford, Laser Instructor, is a Huntsville native with a lifelong love for astronomy. He graduated from UAH in 2018 with a BA in Psychology and minor in Management & Leadership. He worked at the US Space and Rocket Center as an Astronomy & General Space Camp Presenter for three years, and is currently a private tutor for all ages.

  • Taylor has been a math tutor and a Space Camp Counselor, instructing and engaging with students in STEM subjects for over seven years. They bring a passion for uncovering the ‘aha’ moments with students and being an active collaborator in the process of discovery and learning.

  • “Float” transplanted to HSV over 10 years ago from Atlanta, Ga. He splits his time between his two passions, art and science, working as both a mural artist and a STEM educator. He started his educational career developing and teaching STEAM (STEM + Arts) curriculum with HSV STEAM Works and has been lucky to work with other wonderful organizations like the Boys and Girls club of North Alabama as well as teaching art out of his Lowe Mill Studio. He’s very excited to be working with Rocket City Lasers, where he can combine his love of the arts with the wonders of science!

  • Way back when, Brian engaged in electronic and effects performance art as part of a band. He enjoys curating our Saturday night shows and maxing out the fog in the room without setting off the fire alarms!
